No. School-sponsored prayer in public school is forbidden. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment in the Constitution prohibits a school or any part of the government giving the appearance of endorsing one religion over another or endorsing religion over non-religion.
The Supreme Court has recognized that “prayer exercises in public schools carry a particular risk of indirect coercion.” [1] Teacher-led Bible reading or prayer are not allowed even if the prayer is nondenominational or voluntary. [2] [1] Lee v. Weisman, 505 U.S. 577, 592 (1992) (finding Establishment Clause violation where middle school invited rabbi to give nonsectarian prayer at graduation). [2] Sch. Dist. of Abingdon Twp. v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203 (1963)(striking down state law that required Bible reading each day); Committee for Voluntary Prayer v. Wimberly, 704 A.2d 1199 (D.C. 1997)(holding ballot proposal unconstitutional that would have allowed student-initiated voluntary prayer at all kinds of school events). |
